Kamel Haddad

Professor of Mathematics and Special Consultant for Student Success Projects in CSTEM

Home: Welcome

Kamel Haddad is professor of mathematics at CSUSM and served as Vice Provost and Interim Provost from 2014-2020. During Haddad’s five-year tenure as Vice Provost, he facilitated the advent of engineering programs to CSUSM; led the Student Access Initiative and Degree, Set, Go!; and implemented FTES models driven by student demand. His work on identifying and removing operational barriers to student success contributed to freshman and transfer graduation rates reaching record highs.
As Interim Provost, Haddad helped the campus transition to a new President, increased faculty tenure-track density, oversaw the transition of academic advising to academic affairs, and onboarded three new members of academic affairs’ senior leadership team. Prior to joining CSUSM, Haddad served as the Associate Dean in the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering at California State University, Bakersfield. Haddad is a senior Fulbright scholar and professor of mathematics.
Haddad joined the CSU family straight out of graduate school and is honored to have served at two of its campuses. He was raised in Beirut, Lebanon, where he attended a French K-12 school. He immigrated to the United States at the height of the Lebanese civil war to pursue higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Maryland in the area of topological and symbolic dynamics.
Haddad is an avid bridge player, a member of the Screen Actors Guild, an average (but committed) racquetball player, and a huge fan of his wife and two children.
